The Science behind U30

TRAIN, DON'T DRAIN

  • Over-training is real and it can result in plateaus, minimizing of gains, decreased motivation, increased risk of injury, frequent sickness by depressing the immune system, insomnia due to hormonal system overload, mental stress, and many other unhealthy consequences.¹ Less is more when it comes to training.
  • Research from the University of Copenhagen in Denmark reports that 30 minutes of exercise provides just as much as 60 minutes of exercise in terms of weight loss and body mass improvements.³

OVERTRAINING, ACCORDING TO PUBMED.GOV²

  • “​A maladapted response to excessive exercise without adequate rest, resulting in perturbations of multiple body systems (neurologic, endocrinologic, immunologic) coupled with mood changes.”
  • Over-training causes cortisol (stress hormone) to rise and BDNF (brain-derived neurotropic factor) to plummet.⁸ BDNF is responsible for the growth and maturation of nerve cells, cellular communication, learning and memory, and plays a role in the management of healthy weight and eating habits.¹¹
  • When you workout a specific muscle, you are creating micro tears in the muscle fibers. Given at least 48 hours of rest, the micro tears will fill in, thus the muscle grows back just a bit bigger. However, if the muscle fibers are constantly being torn, they will never get the opportunity to grow back bigger.
  • Working out is catabolic. Resting is anabolic.

U30 BURST TRAINING VS. CONTINUOUS ENDURANCE TRAINING

  • Burst training triggers the release of a protein called PGC-1-alpha (peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma coactivator-1 alpha) while a couple of extra minutes jogging does not.⁵ PGC-1-alpha regulates mitogenesis (the growth of new mitochondria) and metabolism. The increase of PGC-1-alpha is directly related to the increase of FNDC5 (fibronectin type III domain-containing protein), which is directly related to increases in BDNF (brain-derived neurotropic factor).⁶ BDNF improves the function of neurons, encourages their growth, and protects them against premature cell death. It also binds to receptors at synapses, which improves signal strength between neurons.⁷
  • Burst training raises anabolic hormones, like growth hormone.⁴ In fact, it is almost 10 times more effective at doing this than endurance training!⁹
  • The long-term impacts of endurance training include increased cardiovascular risk, altered endocrine systems, and kidney damage.⁴

  • Burst training is much more time efficient than endurance training.
