Are You a Lion or a Cat? Productive vs. Busy

Are you a lion or a cat?

Here’s how you can tell:

Do you eat antelope or field mice?

In relatable terms, are you productive or just busy?

You see, we fall into the trap of being busy because being busy is usually visible. We go to meetings, see countless clients, post to social media, and bounce ideas off our peers all day. We are visibly busy, which makes us feel good about ourselves in the moment.

To do productive, meaningful work, like writing a book, or anything else that requires intense focus for long periods of time, is less measurable. This work is arduous, long, difficult, and not measurable until the product is finished, at which point the amount of things you have produced only stands at 1. But this is real productivity, this is chasing after antelope.

Going after field mice is a quick fix, and is only temporary. It is easy to do this today, but it makes our life hard tomorrow. At the end of it all, we may feel empty.

Going after antelope is a long-term, meaningful fix. It is hard to do this today, but it makes our life easy tomorrow. At the end of it all, we are full.

Here’s how I look at it: You can post to Facebook and Twitter saying “big things to come” every month while going to 1,000 photoshoots just to show everyone on Instagram how great you are, or you can do something that is truly big and meaningful like write a book that shares your truth with the world, while summoning others to do the same.

Field mice or antelope, your choice.

Are you a lion or a cat?
